Mar Vista: "Modernique Homes"

Architect Gregory Ain (1908-1988) built the 52 homes on the two block Modernique Homes Tract in 1948 with the goal of providing cost-efficient housing to low and middle income families while using the principles of modern design.

Ain was one of Richard Neutra's students and his houses reflect Neutra's classic California Modernism of simple forms, clean lines, and muted colors. Garrett Eckbo worked closely with Ain to develop the original landscaping for the tract.

This two block area is now a Los Angeles Historic Preservation Overlay Zone which means that home-owners cannot make exterior modifications that alter the style of the protected houses.

About a third of the houses on the tract have overhanging front roofs with double "V" supports:
