Bungalow Heaven

Bungalow Heaven is a lovely neighborhood in Pasadena comprised of almost 1000 one-story Arts and Crafts style bungalows. With its quiet tree-lined streets, pretty gardens, and centrally located park, Bungalow Heaven is one of L.A.'s most charming neighborhoods. Most of the houses in this area were built in the 1910s-1920s and include characteristics typical of the American Craftsman style including low-pitched roofs, overhanging eaves, and beautiful, handcrafted stonework and woodwork.

Bungalow Heaven is bordered by E. Washington Blvd. to the North, E. Orange Grove Blvd. to the South, N. Lake Ave. to the West, and N. Hill Ave. to the East. Every spring, the Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Association organizes a home tour with 8 different restored bungalows open to the public. For more Pasadena Arts and Crafts pictures, check out my post on the Gamble House.

  1. Someone from that organization contacted me to advertise the event. I tried to accommodate her while sticking to my blog's character, but things didn't work out. She should have contacted you. This is a great post on the subject (as is the usual).

So when are you going to feature my cat?

  2. oh I would love this area!

When I was writing up the history of the Californian bungalows in Australia, I was perfectly aware of the new style's arrival in Australia during the 1914-18 war. And during my architectural trips to the usa over the years, I have certainly seen bungalows here and there. But this is wonderful - an entire Pasadena neighbourhood.

    Many thanks for the link

  3. Great photos. I say that as a semi pro photographer. I am a native of Los Angeles. I ache for that style of architecture that still has character. I live near Brea which has it's niches of bungalows built when oil company employees needed space to live. That and years in the upper midwest. It's great to see this style getting some recognition.
